OLHI does not search insurers\u2019 records directly and does not determine whether a policy exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OLHI reviews the request for eligibility and forwards the information to participating insurers, which conduct their own searches.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.olhi-oap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Image9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1013 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Before submitting your request<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Please ensure that you meet the following requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Search on your own first:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/olhi-oap.ca\/en\/news\/how-to-find-if-a-life-insurance-policy-exists-for-a-deceased-person\/\">review our tips for trying to locate the policy yourself<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Provide evidence that it exists:<\/strong> you must have specific information suggesting that a policy exists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meet the time requirement:<\/strong> the death must have occurred more than 3 months but less than 2 years ago.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confirm that the policy is eligible:<\/strong> only life insurance policies issued in Canada are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submit a reasonable request:<\/strong> a reference in a will or another document may be sufficient. Each insurer then searches its own records. OLHI will contact you if additional information is required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If your request is not eligible<\/strong>, your information is not added to the search list and is not shared with participating insurers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>OLHI does not conduct the searches itself. It also does not send an acknowledgment or confirmation indicating whether a request was added to the search list or whether participating insurers completed their searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For privacy reasons, OLHI does not follow up on search results. If a policy is found, the insurer will contact the beneficiary or the estate directly, if permitted to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important to Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Participating companies:<\/strong> most Canadian life and health insurance companies participate in OLHI. However, if the policy was issued by a company that does not participate, the search will not be able to locate it through this service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Group policies:<\/strong> some group policies may not be found.
